Q: |
I am hoping to compete in
figure and possibly fitness model in the future. I am naturally
heavier on the bottom - have the saddlebags, have very strong, big
legs naturally and always have a fairly flat stomach and have good
abs with not much work from horseback riding. Just wondering if you
can suggest any exercises that will target that saddle bag area
without adding bulk there on in my legs....any suggestions much
appreciated. Thanks,
N.

Hi N, It seems as women in
particular, there is always one area that bugs us the most. I too am
naturally heavier on the bottom, and work extra hard on my bum and
legs. This year I have noticed results by training legs twice a
week, with light to no weight, high repetitions combined with
plyometric training. For example, I might start with walking lunges
with back knee dropping right to the floor, no weight for up to 6
times across the gym, or backyard. Sprints, jumping or skipping, and
pop squats do wonders on toning legs and keeping them lean. And of
course, diet, diet, diet. Remember that your diet accounts to 80% of
your results. Eating small, frequent meals containing lean protein,
clean carbs like oatmeal, yams, and brown rice, as well as lots of
greens will do wonders on maintaining a slim lower body.
Hope that gives you a few
ideas. Good Luck with all you do!

Hi J,
The fitness modeling
world is a huge topic, and could go in so many directions.
Most girls get started in the industry by competing. I'm not
sure if that is a direction you wish to go or not. Competing
allows you into circles where fitness scouts, photographers
and magazines are. It also may give you some exposure as
most shows are covered by popular fitness magazines.
At these shows, its
important to come prepared with professional business or
comp cards. This way you are always ready to leave your
contact information as you never know who you may meet.
Working with a
reputable photographer will give you the opportunity to
build a portfolio of different pictures and some
photographers submit to magazines as well. Remember to do
research on the photographer you are working with as many
that are not reputable visit these shows making false
promises of making girls famous.
Once you have
established good connections, practice, practice and then
practice some more. You need to be able to look relaxed in
front of the camera as well as do a number of various facial
expressions; even the best photographer in the world can't
sell your work if you only have one look.
Pursue your goals!
