2007 British Columbia Provincial Championships, by David Ford North Vancouver, BC. The 2007 British Columbia Provincial Championships saw a second sell-out crowd in as many years as the 697 seat Centennial Theatre was host once again to the event put on by Kosta Kromidas and his Pantheon Athletic Club team. Eighty five athletes competed for the coveted top honours of BC Provincial champions. According to the BCABBA this year's event was the deepest field of athletes to date with quite a few very close classes. Being from Alberta I have witnessed quite a few tight races but will admit that BC has been coming on strong under the great leadership of Sandra Wickham and Ross Webb which was apparent at the recent CBBF Fitness and Figure Championships where BC took 3 or the top 4 places in Figure. Great job guys!
There were a number of stand out athletes and as I posted between shows on Saturday, two in particular didn't see any real challenges. The much awaited reemergence of Athena Siganakis was likely the highlight of the evening. Athena's stage presence and physique will quickly challenge the top athletes at the National level in Edmonton in August. A combination of Nicole Ball's striking good looks and lines, Autumn Raby's lean vascular muscularity and stage presence Athena will make a hugh impact. In the Figure division, Michelle Krack, coming off her win at the 2006 Sandra Wickham Fall Classic, hit her peak conditioning with beautiful lines and a package to match. Great posing, colour, suit cuts and hair and make-up topped Michelle quest for Provincial's top spot. Figure short winner, Teresa Funk showed up and present a good challenge, as did Maria Sharp from the Medium class. Men's bodybuilding wasn't quite as cut and dry in the morning but as the night show progressed it quickly became clear that Rob Churchill was the man to beat. Rob has continuously improved and really out did himself Saturday night with package that easily stood out in the men's overall comparison round. As has almost become a tradition, Middleweight winner, Nick Feeny, took best poser for the men. Nick has dramatically taken his physique from a strong Welterweight winner to a strong Middleweight champion in a two years. Ladies top poser award went to Middleweight Wendy Lindquist who showed up in the best shape I have seen her in. Wendy came a very close second to Kamloops Roseanne Desmarias who also showed up in her best condition.
We were treated with too entertaining guest posers, Colette Nelson and Gunter Schlierkamp. Gunter is likely one of the most personable pro athletes and answered some interesting questions very well after he wowed the crowd with his traditional "stroll through the audience" performance. Gunter is focusing on an acting career for the time being and won't be competing again on a pro stage for a little bit. BC Provincial Overall Winners: Rob Churchill, Athena Siganakis, Sherry Boudreau and Michelle Krack.
